Update Sequence for VMware vSphere 8.0 and Compatible VMware Products

Issue/Introduction

When upgrading an environment to VMware vSphere 8.0, upgrade the components in the order described in this article.

Notes:

• The VMware vRealize cloud management products have been renamed under the VMware Aria brand. However, this article refers to the previous product names.
• The VMware NSX-T Data Center product has been renamed to VMware NSX.

Environment

• VMware vCenter Server 8.0.x
• VMware vSphere ESXi 8.0.x

Upgrade path for VMware vSphere 8.0 and its compatible VMware products:

Important Information:

• Prior to upgrade, NSX for vSphere must be migrated to NSX. For more information, see VMware vSphere 8.0 Release Notes.
• Prior to upgrade, vRealize products must be updated or migrated to version 8.x.
• When upgrading from vSphere 6.7 with NSX, NVDS to CVDS migration is required. To migrate from NVDS to CVDS, you must first upgrade to vSphere 7.0 Update 2 or higher along with NSX 3.1.x or higher. vCenter Server, ESXi hosts, and vSphere Distributed Switch must be upgraded for NVDS to CVDS migration. • vSphere 8.0 deprecates certificates with weak signature algorithms, such as SHA1 and MD5. For more information, see Upgrading vCenter Server or ESXi 8.0 fails during precheck due to a weak certificate signature algorithm
• If Horizon 8 is part of the environment, refer to Update sequence for Horizon 7, Horizon 8, and compatible VMware products (78445)

Notes:

• When updates for multiple products are required in the environment, start with updating the product with the lowest sequence number. After the product was updated, continue with the product with the next sequence number.
• If a product is not present in the environment, update the subsequent product.
• If there are multiple products with the same sequence number, the order of their updates does not matter.
• If a product is managed by vRealize Suite Lifecycle Manager, the minimum version may be dictated by vRealize Suite Lifecycle Manager.
