ISG Content Analysis

Issue/Introduction

This issue is indicative of a service not listening on the expected port or a network configuration issue preventing the connection. By systematically verifying each potential cause, you can isolate and resolve the issue to ensure successful integration between Symantec Messaging Gateway and Symantec Content Analysis.

Cause

Investigating the reported "casoop: error parsing http post response: Error: connect ECONNREFUSED 127.0.0.1:8449" error, with respect to CAS - SMG integration, it points to a connection issue where SMG cannot establish a connection to the Content Analysis service expected to be running on localhost (127.0.0.1) at port 8449.

Resolution

Here are steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue:

1. Verify Content Analysis Service Status
Ensure that the Symantec Content Analysis system is running and operational. If it’s supposed to run on the same machine as SMG (as suggested by the localhost IP address), verify that the service has started successfully.

2. Check Port Configuration
Confirm that Content Analysis is configured to listen on port 8449. This can typically be done through the Content Analysis management interface or configuration files. If the service is running on a different port, you'll need to update the SMG configuration to match.

3. Firewall and Security Settings
Check for any firewall rules or security software that might be blocking connections on port 8449. Even though this is a localhost connection, software firewalls can still block these connections. Ensure that the port is open and allowed for inbound and outbound connections on the local system.

4. Content Analysis Configuration
Double-check the integration settings between SMG and Content Analysis. Make sure that any IP addresses, ports, and other relevant settings match up on both sides of the integration. Please see the Tech. Doc. with the URL below, for guidance. The queue contains messages indicating the files that have been submitted to Content Analysis.

5. Network Configuration
Although the error indicates a local connection (127.0.0.1), ensure there are no network configurations or host file entries that might interfere with local loopback connections. This is less common but worth verifying if other steps do not resolve the issue.

6. Logs and Diagnostics
Review the logs for both Symantec Messaging Gateway and Content Analysis. Look for any error messages or warnings that might provide more context about the connection refusal. These logs can offer valuable insights into configuration issues, port conflicts, or service failures. For the suspected communication issue between SMG and Content Analysis, check the syslog. If there is an issue, there will be a log entry. Use casoop as a search term on the syslog server.

From the CAS appliance, you may collect a PCAP, please collect the troubleshooting log and upload to this ticket, for checks. For guidance, please refer to the Tech. Article with the URL: https://knowledge.broadcom.com/external/article/170966/sysinfo-and-troubleshooting-logs-file-up.html

Please note that there are no indications of a CAS issue, from investigating the reported error. To investigate any further from the CAS, the TS log & PCAP WOULD BE REQUIRED.
