Issue/Introduction

What's the oldest Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) client (agent) version or build that can be managed by the latest Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM)?

Is an older / lower SEPM build compatible with a newer SEP client?

Resolution

The SEP client is typically compatible with the SEPM console of the same build or newer. To be compatible with an older SEPM build requires that it be within the same Release Update (RU)

For example:

  • SEP client 14.3.9205.6000 (14.3 RU6) is not compatible with SEPM 14.3.8262.5000 (14.3 RU5).
  • SEP client 14.2.5569.2100 (14.2 RU2 MP1) is compatible with SEPM 14.3.9205.6000 (14.3 RU6).

However, with RU5 and newer, the SEPM build may be lower than the client build but is still compatible, provided the client RU is the same or older. Note that the last 4 digits of the build number still match a client of the same RU even if the client has a newer patch build.

For example:

  • SEP client 14.3.8296.5000 (14.3 RU5 Patch 2) is compatible with SEPM 14.3.8262.5000 (14.3 RU5).
  • SEP client 14.3.9225.6000 (14.3 RU6 Patch 1) is compatible with SEPM 14.3.9205.6000 (14.3 RU6), but it is not compatible with SEPM 14.3.8262.5000 (14.3 RU5).

Legacy clients

All prior releases of 14.x, 14.2.x, and 14.3.x are compatible with the latest SEPM*. (14.3.23160.8000 (14.3 RU8) as of September 2023.)
