Issue/Introduction

You need to renew the license on a registered EdgeSWG (ProxySG) or Advanced Secure Gateway appliance, but cannot retrieve the license automatically due to one of the following reasons:

  • the Advanced Secure Gateway appliance certificate is expired
  • the EdgeSWG (ProxySG) or Advanced Secure Gateway appliance cannot access Symantec servers on the internet

In these cases, you must renew the license manually.

To manually install a license for the first time on a new appliance, refer to KB166429.

Resolution

To renew the license manually:

  1. Download the license file from myBroadcom. Refer to the instructions for Symantec enterprise products in KB145804.
Note: You will need the appliance serial number to download the file.
  2. Install the license using one of the following methods:

Install a license via the Management Console

You can install the license from a text editor, a local file, or a remote URL. If installing from a text editor, open the file in a text editor to view its contents. If installing from local file, put the license file on a directory that the browser can access. If installing from remote URL, put the license file on a server that the appliance can access.

  1. In the Management Console, select Maintenance > Licensing > Install.
  2. In the License Key Manual Installation section, select one of the following options and then select Continue:
    • Remote URL: In the dialog, enter the fully-qualified URL, including the filename, where the file is located. Select Install.
    • Local File: In the dialog, browse to the directory of the file on the local system.
    • Install from text editor: In the dialog, enter the contents manually or copy and paste the license file contents. Select Install.
  3. Select OK on the message that indicates the license is installed.
  4. Restart the appliance. Select Maintenance > Upgrade. Under Upgrade actions, click Restart.

Install a license via the Admin Console

You can install the license from a text editor, a local file, or a remote URL. If installing from a text editor, open the file in a text editor to view its contents. If installing from local file, put the license file on a directory that the browser can access. If installing from remote URL, put the license file on a server that the appliance can access.

  1. In the Admin Console, select Administration > Licensing > Licensed Components and Subscriptions.
  2. In the Install section, under License Key Manual Installation, select one of the following options:
    • Install from text editor: In the dialog, enter the contents manually or copy and paste the license file contents. Select Install.
    • Local file: In the dialog, browse to the directory of the file on the local system. Select Install.
    • Remote URL: In the dialog, enter the fully-qualified URL, including the filename, where the file is located. Select Download.
  3. After the license is installed, restart the appliance. Select Maintenance > Upgrade. Under Upgrade actions, click Restart.

Install a license via the CLI

You can install the license using the #inline command, which requires that you manually paste contents from the license file. You can alternatively use the #(config)load command, which requires that you put the license file on a server that the appliance can access, and then specify the URL to the file.

Using the #inline command

  1. Open the license file in a text editor and copy the contents to clipboard.
  2. Log in to the CLI and enter enable mode.
  3. Paste the contents of the license file:
#inline license-key <eof_marker>
<pasted_license_file_contents>
<eof_marker>

License install successful

Using the #load command

Note: This method is not supported for EdgeSWG (ProxySG) applications on ISG.

  1. Confirm the path to the license file.
  2. Log in to the CLI and enter config mode.
  3. Specify the path to the file:
    #(config)license-key path <URL>
    ok
  4. Install the license:
    #(config)load license-key
    Downloading from "<URL>"
The license-key has been successfully downloaded.
