Issue/Introduction

Commonly sought after information about upgrading to the new more secure DX NetOps 21.2.x release.

Covers information about upgrading a consolidated DX NetOps environment that might include one or more of the following products integrated with the common DX NetOps Performance Center web UI Portal.

DX NetOps Performance Management (PM) environments with:
- Data Aggregator (DA), Data Repository (DR) and Data Collector(s) (DC)
- DX NetOps Virtual Network Assurance (VNA)
- DX NetOps Spectrum
- DX NetOps Network Flow Analysis (NFA)
- DX NetOps Mediation Manager (CAMM)

Resolution

We recommend starting with the DX NetOps 21.2 Release Notes on the Coordinated Upgrade Process. Those are found here in the Upgrade Requirements for DX NetOps 21.2 documentation.

All the documented complexity comes from Fault Tolerant Data Aggregators (where some components require an uninstall/reinstall process) and/or HTTPS configurations.

The recommended upgrade procedure seen below is done in order to reduce loss of data in two specific areas:

Upgrading NetOps out of order will increase loss of data but stepping out of order should not cause problems after everything is fully upgraded.
1. Note out of order upgrade scenarios have not been tested as there are too many possible scenarios.
2. However, with the addition of authentication, once all components are upgraded there should be no authentication problems or fallout.
3. We believe upgrading "out of order" will ultimately not cause permanent damage but might cause confusion due to possible known data losses.
The upgrade procedure might appear complicated but it covers the full mesh DX NetOps scenario (PM with FT DA, NFA, VNA, CAMM, Spectrum, OI Connector, CABI) and accounts for HTTPS configuration.
If you want to use HTTPS but are not yet configured for it, we recommend upgrading first, then enable HTTPS post upgrade. This will make for a less complex upgrade process.
