Issue/Introduction

The Seagate external storage array is generating the following error:

Error : SEAGATE-ALERT: An event has been generated by the storage array.: Disk channel event. (channel: 0, ID: 31, SN: xxxxxxx, enclosure: 0, slot: 31): I/O Timeout  CDB:8a0000000004155a2000000004000000

Cause

Firmware version NM07 has an issue that causes timeouts and possible drive lockups.

Hard drive is failing.

Resolution

This is fixed by upgrading to firmware version NM09 on the HGST hard drives.   For instructions on how to upgrade the firmware, see the following KB article: Upgrading firmware on the Dell VA012 and VA084 storage arrays

NM09 is available here:  https://license.soleranetworks.com/upgrades/firmware/gen8/nm09-gt280r008-04.zip

If after upgrading to the latest firmware, the I/O timeout messages are still occurring, the drive will most likely need to be replaced.
