Issue/Introduction

Is it possible to recover an unsaved Microsoft Project (MSP) project schedule? This may be needed if MSP unexpectedly crashes on you or one of your users.

Resolution

Recovering an unsaved MSP file would only be possible if you have Auto Save set in MSP. If yes, then they can retrieve the latest saved copy of the file from the MSP Default Save location (usually the documents folder).

To enable auto save going forward:

  1. In MSP, go to File->Options->Save.
  2. Check Auto save every <10> minutes (The minutes can be adjusted to save more frequently).
  3. If you want to auto save all open projects, also change When automatically saving to “Save all open projects”.
  4. You can also uncheck "Prompt before saving" if you don't want to be prompted for each auto save.
  5. Note: This will not auto save the project back to Clarity, see bullet one above for steps to recover the project if you do face any issues.
