Issue/Introduction

When attempting to install the Symantec Endpoint Encryption Management Server you receive an error message that one of the SQL Server feature packs are required in order to complete the installation.

It can be difficult to locate the appropriate files that need to be installed before the installation of Endpoint Encryption can proceed. This article will serve as a step-by-step process to download the necessary files.

After running "SEE Server suite x64.msi", you may receive one of the following error messages before the installer will load:

"SQL Server System CLR Types is required in order to install this software."

Or

"Microsoft SQL Server Management Objects is required in order to install this software"

For information full information on how to install the SEE Management Server, see the following article:

For information on how to install the SEE Client, see the following article:

Resolution

Symantec Endpoint Encryption 11.3.1 and above

For release 11.3.1 and above, install the 32-bit versions of Microsoft SQL Server System CLR Types and Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Management Objects on the machine running Symantec Endpoint Encryption Management Server.

Note that the 32-bit versions are required even though you are using 64-bit SQL Server.

To download the files:

  1. Open the Microsoft SQL Server 2012 SP4 Feature Pack page - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=56041

  2. Click the Download button.

  3. Select these two files. There are two occurrences of each file. The first occurrence of each file is the 32-bit version:
    • SharedManagementObjects.msi 6.4 MB
    • SQLSysClrTypes.msi 2.1 MB

  4. The total size of the downloads should be 8.5 MB.

  5. Click the Next button to download the files.

  6. First install SQLSysClrTypes.msi then SharedManagementObjects.msi.

For ease of locating and installing the proper components, it is fine to download and install both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of these files.
Because it is difficult to know which is 64-bit from the download, we recommend downloading all of them:

If you check the properties of the file and it does not have "x64" in the name, it is the 32-bit version:

The 64-bit version will specifically state that it is for 64bit systems:

*CLR Types Must be installed before the SharedManagementObjects.

This applies to the "SharedManagementObjects.msi" files as well, but it is fine to install both 32 and 64-bit versions on the same Windows Server.

Note that Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Management Objects is required in order to upgrade to Endpoint Encryption 11.3.1. Please see article 206544 for details.

IMPORTANT TIP!  Ask us about our Check Roles Tool that will make the installation of Symantec Endpoint Encryption Management Server simple and seamless!  This is an excellent tool that will both check if the features are enabled and tell you what is missing, and then **install them for you** (When run as administrator).  Please contact our Symantec Encryption Support team and we will be happy to provide the tool for you.  This tool makes it extremely easy to get all these features installed and enabled.  The name of this tool is called "CheckRolesFor_11_3_1_Plus.exe".

Once you have installed the above packages, run the Check Roles Tool you obtained from Support again to make sure no other packages are needed for the installation.

Endpoint Encryption 11.2.1 through 11.3.0 MP1 (No longer supported Upgrade to SEE 11.4 or above is recommended)

For release 11.3.0 MP1 and below, install the 32-bit SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 Feature Packs for "SQL Server System CLR Types" and "SQL Server Shared Management Objects".

Process for installing the SQL Server System CLR Types and Management Objects feature packs:

1. Browse to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=44277

2. Select the appropriate language and click "Download"

3. This will bring up another screen that will allow you to choose the files that you want to download.

4. Scroll down until you find "1033\x86\SharedManagementObjects.msi" and place a check in the box. Make sure it says x86

5. Continue to scroll down until you find "1033\x86\SQLSysClrTypes.msi" and place a check in the box. Again, make sure it says x86

6. Click Next to download the files

7. Install CLR Types first, then Management Objects

After installing the required SQL Server feature packs using the above steps, installation of the Symantec Endpoint Encryption Server Suite should proceed successfully.

TIP: If you are having issues with the Server 2008 trying to get SEE 11.2.1 through 11.3.0 MP1 installed, you can use the Server 2012 installers as mentioned above.   Symantec Enterprise Division recommends you always update to the latest version.  As of the writing of this article, the current version of SEE Management Server is 11.3.1 MP1.

For SEE 11.2.1 through 11.3.0 MP1 we recommended using the CLR types for Server 2008; however, these CLR types are no longer provided by Microsoft and so the only option for you is to download the CLR types for 2012.  These are not generally tested, but should work with these older versions of SEE Management Server.  Symantec Enterprise Division recommends upgrading to SEE Management Server 11.3.1 and above for best results.
