Issue/Introduction

A backup of the Symantec Messaging Gateway (SMG) is failing to an ftp server configured for PASV mode.

A manual connection to the server using the command line ftp is able to login but unable to transfer files.

Environment

Symantec Messaging Gateway

Cause

The ftp server is configured for PASV  mode and this needs to be turned off or all ports opened from the SMG server back to the ftp server so that it can negotiate a data port.

Resolution

They are 2 possible solutions:

1. Open all ports on the firewall on the way back from the SMG to the ftp server

2. Change the ftp server from PASV mode.
