Issue/Introduction

How do I configure LiveUpdate Administrator 2.x (LUA 2.x) server to obtain updates directly from another LUA 2.x server?

Resolution

It is not recommended to use this configuration.

When "daisy chaining," internal servers will not be taking advantage of the very latest updates and protection definitions available from the Internet source servers.  To keep all clients up-to-date with the latest available contents, Symantec  recommends instead to configure the one external LUA 2.x server with multiple Distribution Centers throughout the network.  Using a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), File Transfer Protocol (FTP) or Windows File Share (SMB) server, clients can retrieve the necessary updates from these convenient locations.

An informal description of why daisy chaining is not recommended can be found in the Connect Forum article A Helpful LiveUpdate Administrator 2.x Analogy.

If a network administrator decides that daisy chaining LUA servers is the best choice for their network configuration, please follow these steps:

Perform these steps on the LiveUpdate Administrator (LUA) connecting to the Public LiveUpdate (LU) servers:

  1. Click Configure.
  2. Click Distribution Centers.
  3. Write down the information for Default Production Distribution Center. Specifically:
    • IP Address
    • Port in use
    • Directory listed after the / (clu-prod by default)

On subsequent LUA servers, follow these steps:

  1. Click Configure.
  2. Click Source Servers.
  3. Click Add.
  4. Enter the following settings:
    • Name (use the Primary LUA server name)
    • Priority (1)
    • IP Address
    • Root Directory (clu-prod by default)
    • Protocol (HTTP)
    • Port (7070 by default for LUA 2.2 and 2.3, 8080 by default for LUA 2.1)

  5. Click Test to ensure that the settings are correct, then click OK.
  6. Click Source Servers.
  7. Select the default Symantec server.
  8. Lower the priority to 5.

Notes:

  • Do not remove the default LiveUpdate server listing unless you want to ensure that the LUA server never gets updated from the Symantec internet LiveUpdate source servers.
  • The upstream (connected to Web) LUA server will need to be configured to provide any content required by clients updating through the downstream LUA server.

Additional Information

"External server": One LiveUpdate Administrator 2.x server which can access Symantec's Internet source servers

"Internal server": One LiveUpdate Administrator 2.x server that can directly access the external server, if not the Internet source servers

(For internal servers that have no direct access to the external server, please see Updating downloads in an internal LiveUpdate Administrator 2.x Server using the downloads from an external LiveUpdate Server)
