How to enable the console with Protection Engine version 7.9.x and 8.0 for Core server with user interface mode

Issue/Introduction

You want to operate Symantec Protection Engine (SPE) in the Core server with user interface mode

Resolution

You need to meet the following requirements to use SPE in Core Server with User Interface Mode:

• Java 2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 8.0 (update 121 or later) 64-bit
• Microsoft Internet Explorer 11 or later*
• Mozilla Firefox 32-bit (Extended Support Release) 45 or later
• You must add the "<Java install directory>/bin" folder to Windows Path environment variable before installing Symantec Protection Engine as this is required for SPE to find the run-time dependency that is needed by Java during the installation.

To add the Java Install Directory to the Windows Path, follow these steps:

1. Go to Control Panel
2. Click on System to open the System Properties
3. Click on Advanced system settings
4. Click on Environment Variables
5. Locate and select Path under System variables
6. Click on Edit
7. In Variable value proceed to the end of the field
8. Append the Java path “;<Java install directory>/bin” (without the quotes)

Example: ";C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.8.0_131\bin" (without the quotes)

*If you use a 64-bit version of Microsoft Internet Explorer 11 or later, you must add the following registry key:

1. Open Regedit
2. In Regedit, browse to the following key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MAIN

3. Create a new DWORD value, and name it TabProcGrowth
4. Leave the Default Data Value of 00000000
5. Close the registry 
6. Restart the computer
