Issue/Introduction

You need specific information on supported kernels for the Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) client for Linux.

Note: See Supported Linux kernels for Endpoint Protection 14 for version 14 Linux client support.

Kernel support in Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.6 - 12.1.6 MP9

Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.6 for Linux brings a change to kernel module support. If the precompiled kernel module for Auto-Protect does not enable at the end of installation, an automatic process begins to compile a kernel module for Auto-Protect. For more information on how auto-compile works, including prerequisites, see Auto-compile for Symantec Endpoint Protection client for Linux.

Support for 12.1.6.x includes the kernels listed in this section, plus the list noted in the section for 12.1.5.

For general system requirements and a more complete list of supported operating systems, see the appropriate system requirements page:

The following Linux operating systems (and kernel versions) have been tested and should successfully install and enable the precompiled kernel modules for Auto-Protect:

  • Oracle Enterprise Linux UEK 6.5: 3.8.13-55
  • CentOS 6 Update 4: 2.6.32-358.11.1.el6
  • CentOS 6 Update 5: 2.6.32-431.29.2.el6
  • CentOS 6 Update 9: 2.6.32-696.el6.x86_64 (added with 12.1.6 MP9)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Update 11: 2.6.18-398
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 Update 6: 2.6.32-504
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.0 GA: 3.10.0-123
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 Update 1: 3.10.0-229 (added with 12.1.6 MP5)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 Update 2: 3.10.0-327 (added with 12.1.6 MP5)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 Update 7: 2.6.32-573 (added with 12.1.6 MP5)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 Update 8: 2.6.32-642 (added with 12.1.6 MP5)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 Update 9: 2.6.32-696.el6.x86_64 (added with 12.1.6 MP9)
  • SuSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 11: 2.6.27
  • Ubuntu 12.04 32-bit: 3.2.0-55-generic (added with 12.1.6 MP4)
  • Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit: 3.13.0-63-generic (added with 12.1.6 MP4)
  • Ubuntu 16.04: 4.4.0-28 (added with 12.1.6 MP5)

The following Linux operating systems (and kernel versions) have been tested and should successfully install and enable the auto-compiled kernel modules for Auto-Protect:

  • Amazon Linux: 4.4.8-20.46.amzn1.x86_64 and 4.4.11.23.53.amzn1.x86_64 (added with 12.1.6 MP5)
  • CentOS 6 Update 6: 2.6.32-504
  • CentOS 7.0: 3.10.0-123
  • CentOS 7 Update 1: 3.10.0-229
  • CentOS 7 Update 2: 3.10.0-327.28.3.el7.x86_64 (added with 12.1.6 MP6)
  • CentOS 7 Update 3: 3.10.0.514.2.2 (added with 12.1.6 MP7)
  • Debian 8 Jessie: 3.16.0-4-amd64 (added 12.1.6 MP8)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 Update 2: 3.10.0-327
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 Update 3: 3.10.0-514 (added with 12.1.6 MP7)
  • SuSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 11 SP3: 3.0.101-0.46 (added with 12.1.6 MP3)
  • Ubuntu 13.04: 3.9.8

  • Ubuntu 14.04
    • 3.16 (added with 12.1.6 MP3)
    • 4.2.0-16 (added with 12.1.6 MP5)
  • Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit: 4.4.0-21 (added with 12.1.6 MP5)
  • Ubuntu 16.04 (12.1.6 MP5)

Note: This list should not be considered complete and exclusive. Unless specified otherwise, kernel versions apply to both 32- and 64-bit kernels. Linux operating systems and kernels that do not appear on this list may successfully install and enable the Auto-Protect kernel module.

If you find an issue with an auto-compiled AP module, open a case with Support. They will work with Engineering to evaluate such issues on a case-by-case basis.

Kernel support in Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.5

For the following tables, please be aware that due to the addition of kernel support for Symantec Endpoint Protection for Linux, some kernels that were previously supported by Symantec AntiVirus for Linux (SAVFL) have been moved to the legacy (unsupported) list. For example, the kernel versions that are supported in Symantec AntiVirus for Linux 1.0 MR14 are not necessarily supported in Symantec Endpoint Protection for Linux 12.1.5.

Auto-Protect functionality is available only on supported kernels.

Note: A minor variance greater than the version of the kernel listed as certified is considered supported, as long as the first four (4) digits match the certified kernel. This means that if you experience an issue, you do not need to reproduce it with the certified kernel noted on this list.

If you use a version of a Linux distribution that uses a Symantec Endpoint Protection legacy kernel and need to troubleshoot issues with it, you would need to update the Linux distribution to use a supported kernel version and then reproduce the issue.

For example, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6U5 2.6.32-431.el6.* is listed as a supported kernel, but you can also use version Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6U5 2.6.32-431.17.1.el6.* with Symantec Endpoint Protection for Linux.

For general system requirements, see System requirements for the Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.5 client for Linux.
