When attempting to start the Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange windows service the service does not start. A dialog box with the following error message appears:
The Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange Service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some Services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts service.

The DLL used to integrate with IIS transport event sinks is not registered correctly.

Manually register the SMSMSE DLL using the following steps:
1. Open a command prompt (Start -> Run, cmd).
2. CD to c:\Program Files\Symantec\SMSMSE\<version>\Server.
NOTE: Change <version> to the version of SMSMSE installed. The following is an example when SMSMSE 6.5 is installed:
cd c:\Program Files\Symantec\SMSMSE\6.5\Server
3. Determine the DLL name by running the following command in the command prompt:
For example on SMSMSE 6.5.6 the following is the result:
Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is CCA0-4887
Directory of C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\SMSMSE\6.5\Server

In this case the name of the DLL is SMTP268.DLL.
4. Run the regsvr32.exe command with the name of the DLL. The following is an example with the above DLL:
If the command is successful, a dialog box appears with the following message:
DllRegisterServer in SMTPXXX.dll succeeded
Start the SMSMSE windows service.
