After upgrading to PGP Desktop 10.1.x for Windows, you randomly receive an error that Windows is unable to save data and that the data has been lost.
What causes this issue?
PGP software places the PGP metadata files on certain specific sectors (absolute sector numbers) on the disk. It keeps track of them elsewhere in the meta data. Other file system drivers\software can move these meta data files from the specific sectors to another sector location on the disk.
How was the issue corrected in earlier releases?
PGP Desktop includes a self healing recovery mechanism that is triggered every time PGP Tray touches the PGP metadata files. This also occurs when the computer is rebooted.
We double check if the metadata files are in the same location as we expect them to be or have they been moved. If another file system driver has moved the files, we heal by moving them to another known sector location and then update the internal metadata to remember this new known location.
When customer sees a Delayed Write Failure message, they need to close and restart the PGP Tray or reboot the computer as soon as possible. This will trigger the self healing mechanism described in the causes section above.
