Beginning in version 9.5 of PGP Desktop, PGP NetShare introduces on-the-fly encryption and decryption of files and folders, including those stored on network volumes and shared with others. Featuring integration with Active Directory via PGP Universal, PGP NetShare allows groups of users to work together on secure documents.
In PGP Desktop versions 9.5 - 9.7, PGP NetShare allowed authorized users to have full control of the PGP NetShare folder. Once a person is added, that person has all the rights and privileges as any other member. The new member can add new files to or remove existing files from the Protected Folder, and can remove other Authorized Users, including you.
PGP Desktop 9.8 allows you to apply user roles for authorized users of PGP NetShare folders.
Note: This article pertains to a version of PGP Desktop that has reached an End of Life(EOL) and End of Support Life(EOSL). For more information on the End of Support Life dates for PGP Software products see the following article.
This article details the PGP NetShare User Roles in PGP Desktop 9.8 and above.
This is the "owner" of the protected folder. The Admin can add users and remove users, and can change the roles of Users and Group Admins. The Admin has full rights to read and write to the protected folder. There can be only one Group Admin for each protected folder, but this role is optional you do not need to specify an Admin for the protected folder. You become an Admin by creating a protected folder, adding yourself as a member, and applying the Admin role to yourself. You can be a member of multiple Admin sets at one time.
The Admin role cannot be removed by a Group Admin, but an Admin can reassign his or her role to another member. Admins must have full write access to the protected folder.
This is the "administrator" of the protected folder. The Admin can add and remove users, and can promote users to Group Admins or demote Group Admins to Users. The Group Admin has full rights to read and write to the protected folder. There can be multiple Group Admins for each PGP NetShare protected folder. Group Admins must have full write access to the protected folder.
This is the set of users who are allowed to access the protected files in the shared space. The files in the protected folder are encrypted to the keys of the Users. You become a User when a protected folder is created, you are added to the PGP NetShare, and the Admin or Group Admin assigns the User role to you. All Users have equal privileges to read and write to the protected folder.
Users do not have the ability to change the roles of other Users. You can be a member of multiple User sets at one time.
Note: If you have a folder that is protected with a previous version of PGP Desktop, you must select new roles for existing users manually.
