KNOWN ISSUE: SBS services will not run because SbsNSiSignal.ini is malformed or missing

Even though all PXE services start up and run, client computers will not PXE boot correctly.  Often the client machine will report "PXE-E77: Bad or missing discovery server list"

When starting up the SBS services, pay attention to the 'C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Agents\Deployment\Task Handler\SBS\SBSStore' folder.  When the '_Symantec_netBoot_Interface' service starts up, this folder should be created (if it didn't exist already).  Starting up the '_Symantec_netBoot_NSiSignal' service will generate three files as listed below.

The first should be generated almost immediately upon startup of the NSiSignal service startup.  The other two should generate approximately 30 seconds later (and the numeric value in the file name will vary).

If these three files are not generating, there is likely an issue with the SbsNSiSignal.ini file.

There are a few possibilities as to the cause of this issue:

  1. The file was not correctly written at initial installation of the product.  Possibilities of install order or permissions may affect this.
  2. The file was accidentally or intentially modified manually at some point after installation by a user.
  3. The file was changed by an automatic process either hardware of software related.

In the '<Program Files>\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Agents\Deployment\Task Handler\SBS' directory, there should a file named 'SbsNSiSignal.ini'.  The contents of this file should be as follows:

Path="C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Agents\Deployment\Task Handler\SBS\"

The install directory listed under 'Path' should match the Agent install directory accordingly (also should be the directory in which this .ini file is found).

If the file includes different contents, copy/paste the text found here (modifying for your environment as necessary) into the file.  If there is no 'SbsNSiSignal.ini' present, create it using notepad and name it accordingly, including the text here as the contents of the created file.
