How to identify the supported VMware tools versions for a guest operating system

This article provides information about how to query the supported VMware tools versions for a guest operating system.

Resolution

Use the following options to get the information related to supported VMware tools versions for guest operating system:

• In the Broadcom Compatibility Guide, check the information regarding OS support introduced from which version of ESXi. For example, Windows Server 2019 support introduced on ESXi 6.0.
• If Tools available bundled with host is supported, use the VMTools VMware version-mapping site to find the corresponding VMTools version for that ESXi. For example, if tools version is 9.10.0 bundled in ESXi 6.0, the supported VMware Tools versions >= 9.10.0 for Windows Server 2019.
• If Tools are available for download, refer to the What’s New section on VMware Tools Release Notes at and then download the supported tools versions from Customer Connect portal. For example, VMware Tools 12.5.0 Release Notes.
