Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • vCenter Server Tasks and Events retention period is changed to 30 Days from 180 Days after upgrading to 6.0 or later
  • vCenter Server parameters event.maxAge and task.maxAge get updated to 30 Days from 180 Days
  • Custom retention period configurations ( Other than 180 Days, For example 179 or 181) are preserved after upgrade

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 6.5.x
VMware vCenter Server 6.0.x
VMware vCenter Server 6.7.x

Cause

In vCenter Server before 6.0, the default retention periods were 180 days. During an upgrade to 6.0 or later, the default retention period of Events and Tasks in vCenter Server is expected to change to the new default retention period of 30 days.

This behavior is applicable when vCenter Server 6.x is upgraded to an upper version such as 6.0 -> 6.5, 6.0 -> 6.5, 6.5 -> 6.7 with retention period configured to 180 Days.

Resolution

This is an expected behavior. Change the retention period configuration again after an upgrade of vCenter Server if required

Workaround:
Configure a retention period other than default values ( 180 Days ) to preserve the retention period configuration after upgrade.
