Issue/Introduction

This article explains the vSAN Build Recommendation - vSAN release catalog up-to-date check in the vSAN Skyline Health and provides details on why it might report warning or error state. This health check has been deprecated as of vSAN 9.x and is now part of vLCM checks.

 

Symptoms:

• vSAN Skyline health reports warning or an alarm "vSAN release catalog up-to-date" 

"vCenter UI > vSAN Cluster > Monitor > Skyline Health"

Environment

• VMware vSAN 7.x
• VMware vSAN 8.x
• VMware Telco Cloud Platform 5.0

Cause

The vSAN release catalog maintains information about available releases, preferred order for releases, and critical patches needed for each release. This alarm is triggered when the age of the vSAN Release Catalog used for vSAN build recommendation is outdated.

This warning is expected when the database is older than 90 or 180 days respectively. vSAN release catalog will be updated when there are new releases or critical patches.

Resolution

 If the vCenter Server lacks internet connectivity, manually upload the release catalog using these steps:

1. Download the latest vSAN release catalog (all.json) from a machine with internet access: vSAN Updates JSON Catalog.
   Note: Right-click the link and select Save Link As... to save the file as all.json
   
2. Log in to the vSphere Client.
3. Navigate to vCenter Server > Configure > vSAN > Update.
4. In the Release catalog section, click Update from file.
5. Browse to and select the all.json file downloaded in Step 1.
6. Navigate to Cluster > Monitor > Skyline Health and click Retest to clear the alarm.

For vSAN 9.x and higher, this check is integrated into VMware vSphere Lifecycle Manager (vLCM).
