Unable to modify/repair/uninstall SRM service

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• Modifying/repairing/uninstalling the SRM service fail while uninstalling SRM database before uninstalling the SRM service.

• You see errors similar to:

• ​Uninstall:

Fatal error during installation

•  Repair:

Site Recovery Manager Setup Error

The wizard was interrupted before Site Recovery Manager could be completely uninstalled. 
Your system has not been modified. To complete uninstallation at another time, please run install again.

• Modify:

Setup failed to connect to the database. Make sure that the DSN is valid and you entered the correct username and password.

Environment

VMware Site Recovery Manager 6.x

Resolution

Currently, there is no resolution.
Ensure you do not uninstall the Site Recovery Manager database before uninstalling the Site Recovery Manager. For more information, see Uninstall Site Recovery Manager.

Workaround:
To work around this issue, use one of the following options:

Option 1: 

Change registry value of UseEmbeddedDb from 1 to 0 under registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VMware, Inc.\VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager and  then uninstall SRM.
Note: This procedure modifies the Windows registry. Before making any registry modifications, ensure that you have a current and valid backup of the registry and the virtual machine. For more information on backing up and restoring the registry, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 256986.

Option 2: 

1. Make a note of the settings for DSN: username, password, DB name.
2. Remove the old DSN to old Embedded DB.
3. Install the Embedded DB.
4. Create a new DSN with the same values as the old DSN.

Note: You can find vPostgres install file in the temp folder %Temp%\{88654B50-D147-44FA-9A1F-EFAAD980C428}\VMware-SRM-Postgres after extracting SRM.

5. Start SRM Modify and uninstall SRM.

Note: Do not select the Delete SRM data check box.

The SRM will be uninstalled successfully.

6. Uninstall Embedded DB server and remove the DSN attached to it.
7. Install the SRM with Embedded DB pointing to the old VC.
8. You will see a warning message that the SRM extension is already registered. Click Overwrite.
