Removing the disk from a virtual machine in vCenter Server fails with the error: Cannot remove the disk as one or more snapshot disk depends on

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
When you add the base disk as Independent- non persistent disk to the same virtual machine, you experience these symptoms:

• You can add the disk (vmdk) with duplicate the UUID to a virtual machine.
• Removing the disk from a virtual machine in vCenter Server fails.
• You see the error:
  
  Cannot remove the disk as one or more snapshot disk depends on

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5
VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x

Cause

vCenter Server allows you to add vmdk with the duplicate UUID to a virtual machine with warning. However, vCenter Server does not allow you to remove the disk from a virtual machine.

Resolution

This is an expected behavior.

When you are adding disks ensure that disks belongs to the virtual machine that is created using the template of the backup appliance (virtual machine). Disks of different virtual machines created by the same template have same UUID.
