Issue/Introduction

This article provides information on backing up and restoring VMware NSX for vSphere 6.x components ( NSX Manager, Controller nodes, NSX Edge (DLR, ESG)).

Environment

VMware NSX for vSphere 6.1.x
VMware NSX for vSphere 6.3.x
VMware NSX for vSphere 6.4.x
VMware NSX for vSphere 6.2.x
VMware NSX for vSphere 6.0.x

Resolution

VMware only supports backing up the NSX Edge and controller through the NSX Manager.

To configure the backup and restore of NSX Manager, see:

VMware strongly recommends to do a backup of NSX and vCenter Server at the same time. If there are inconsistencies between the NSX and vCenter Server backup, you may encounter several errors and unexpected issues after a restore of the NSX Manager.

All NSX Edge configurations (DLR and ESG) and controller nodes are backed up as part of NSX Manager data backup.
If you have an intact NSX Manager configuration, you can recreate an inaccessible or failed Edge appliance VM by redeploying the NSX Edge (click the Redeploy NSX Edge icon in the vSphere Web Client).

Notes:
  • If you attempt to backup/restore the NSX Edge components using any other process, you may get error with respect to grouping object while restoring NSX Edges.

    <errors>
    <error>
    <details>[Firewall] Invalid groupingObjectId ipset-xx. This object does not exist or is not available for this NSX Edge.</details>
    <errorCode>12009</errorCode>
    <moduleName>vShield Edge</moduleName>
    </error>
    <error>

  • This process is not supported by VMware.
