Upgrading vCenter Single Sign-On 5.5 to 5.5 Update 2d fails with Error 1722

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• When the SSO installer is loading, you see the error:
  
  Error 1722: There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.

• The %temp%\vim.sso-msi.log file contains entries similar to:
  
  Action started 10:39:08: VM_InstallPython.
  
  CustomAction VM_InstallPython returned actual error code 1603 (note this may not be 100% accurate if translation happened inside sandbox)

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x

Cause

This issue occurs when the GUID for the VMware-Python has changed.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, reinstall the python component.

To reinstall the python component:
 

1. Stop all Single Sign-On Services in this order:
   • VMware Secure Token Service
   • VMware Identity Management Service
   • VMware Certificate Service
   • VMware Kdc Service
   • VMware Directory Service
2. Click Start > Run ,type regedit and then click OK.
3. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
   
   Note: Take a backup of the registry before you proceed.
    
4. Go to Edit > Find and search for vmware-python.
5. You should now see the InstallProperties Key being expanded.
   The DisplayName entry will have a value for VMware-python.
6. Open the UninstallString Entry and copy the Value (ex.: MsiExec.exe /I{GUID})
7. Open an Administrative Command Prompt and paste the UninstallString Value.
8. Change the /I{ to /x{ (ex.: MsiExec.exe /x {GUID} )
9. Execute the command. This will force uninstall of Python Component.
10. Install the Python Pre-requisite from the Upgrade_Media\Single Sign-On\prerequisites folder.
11. Start the Single Sign-On Services in this order:
    • VMware Directory Service
    • VMware Kdc Service
    • VMware Certificate Service
    • VMware Identity Management Service
    • VMware Secure Token Service
12. Start the Single Sign-On Update as normal.
