Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• Upgrading or installing VMware tools to version 9.10.0 (ESXi 6.0GA) on a Windows Server 2008 R2/Windows 7 fails
• You see the error:
  
  VMware Tools Setup Wizard ended prematurely
   
• In the %TEMP%\vmmsi.log file, you see entries similar to:
  
  MSI (s) (A0:54) [<time>:517]: Note: 1: 1708

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 6.0

Cause

This issue occurs because the VMware Tools installer is unable to find the everyone user group on Windows 2008 R2/Windows 7 server.

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting ESXi 6.0.

This issue is resolved in ESXi 6.0 Update 1. For more information, see the ESXI 6.0 Update 1 Release Notes. Download the latest version available at Customer Connect.

 

To work around this issue, temporarily create a everyone user group on the Windows 2008 R2/Windows 7 server.

 

To create a everyone user group on the Windows 2008 R2/Windows 7 server temporarily:

1. Create a local group named everyone on the Windows 2008 R2/Windows 7 system.
2. Add the user installing VMware Tools to the everyone group.
3. Run the installation for VMware Tools again. For more information, see General VMware Tools installation instructions (1014294).
4. After the VMware Tools installation completes remove the everyone group.

Alternatively, you can also install a previous version of VMware Tools from http://packages.vmware.com/tools/esx/.
