Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• The VMware VirtualCenter Server service fails to start.
• The VMware VirtualCenter Server service cannot connect to the Single Sign-On service
• The vpxd.log located at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VirtualCenter\logs contains errors similar to:

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.1.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x

Cause

This issue occurs when a realtime virus scan puts a lock on files used by SSO or makes the files unavailable.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, perform one of these options:

• Stop scanning all files.
• Prevent the scanning of the SSO folder, located at:
  
  vCenter Server 5.1:
  C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\SSOServer\
  
  vCenter Server 5.5:
  C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\VMware\cis\vmware-sso
