Reinstalling vSphere Auto Deploy fails with the error: The service is already registered with the vCenter Server

Issue/Introduction

This article provides the steps to manually remove vSphere Auto Deploy, which allows it to be reinstalled.

Symptoms:

• Unable to reinstall vSphere Auto Deploy
• Reinstalling vSphere Auto Deploy fails
• You see the error:
  
  The service is already registered with the vCenter Serve

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.0.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.1.x

Cause

This issue occurs if vSphere Auto Deploy is not completely removed during an uninstallation.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, unregister and re-register the vSphere Auto Deploy service.

To unregister and re-register the vSphere Auto Deploy service, please follow the steps mentioned below:

Option 1:

1. If autodeploy service is still running then stop the service.

service-control --stop rbd

2. Manually unregister the Auto Deploy service by running the command:

autodeploy-register -U -a vCenter_IP_address -u username -w password -p 80

3. Reinstall vSphere Auto Deploy.

If Option 1 does not work, follow the steps mentioned in Option 2 to do a clean reinstall of autodeploy service.

Option 2:

WARNING: This procedure will wipe out all autodeploy related data and state.

1. If autodeploy service is still running then stop the service.

service-control --stop rbd

2. rm -rf /etc/vmware-rbd/

3. rm -rf /storage/autodeploy/cache

4. Manually unregister the Auto Deploy service by running the command:

autodeploy-register -U -a vCenter_IP_address -u username -w password -p 80

5. Reinstall vSphere Auto Deploy.
