Issue/Introduction

For troubleshooting purposes, to clear errors, and to stop tasks with vSphere Update Manager, it may be necessary to change the status of your Update Manager service. This article provides steps to stop, start, or restart the Update Manager service.

Resolution

Stopping the vSphere Update Manager service

To stop the vSphere Update Manager service:

Note: When you stop the vSphere Update Manager service, any activity using vSphere Update Manager is stopped. You cannot use Update Manager until you start the service.
  1. Log in as an Administrator to the server that is running vSphere Update Manager.
  2. Click Start > Run, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  3. From the list of services, right-click VMware Update Manager.
  4. Click Stop and wait for the service stop.

Starting the vSphere Update Manager service

To start the vSphere Update Manager service if it has stopped:
  1. Log in as an Administrator to the server that is running vSphere Update Manager.
  2. Click Start > Run, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  3. From the list of services, right-click VMware Update Manager.
  4. Click Start and wait for the service startup to complete.

Restarting the vSphere Update Manager Service

To restart the vSphere Update Manager service:
  1. Log in as an administrator to the server that is running vSphere Update Manager.
  2. Click Start > Run, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  3. From the list of services, right-click VMware Update Manager.
  4. Click Restart and wait for the service to complete restarting.
Note: If the vSphere Update Manager service does not start, or has trouble restarting, verify that it is able to communicate with the database and the appropriate permissions have been assigned.
