Issue/Introduction

This article provides the steps to ensure that your Mac has a network connection and can connect to the Internet.

Resolution

To check whether your Mac has a network connection:

1. In Finder, go to /Applications/Utilities and open Network Utility.
   For recent versions of Mac OS X: In Finder, go to Macintosh HD/System/Library/Core Services/Network Utility.

2. In the Select a network interface for information dropdown, select a network adapter. The network adapter is likely to be Ethernet if your computer plugs into a jack, modem, or router, and Wi-Fi or AirPort if you have a wireless connection.

3. The IP Address field should not be blank and must not start with 169.254. If it does, see the Troubleshooting network connection issues section of this article. If you have any other IP address and if the Link Status field is set to Active, you have a network connection.

Troubleshooting network connection issues

If your Mac does not have a network connection, or if your Mac has a network connection but cannot connect to the Internet, use the Network Diagnostics utility to test and repair your connection.

 

To troubleshoot network connection issues on your Mac:

1. From the Apple menu, go to System Preferences.
2. Click Network.
3. Click Assist Me, and then click Diagnostics.
4. Follow the prompts to resolve the network issues.

If the diagnostic fails to connect to the Internet, rule out other conflicts:

1. Ensure that the Mac firewall is not enabled and is blocking your Internet connection.
   
   To check the Mac firewall settings and to disable it:
    
   1. From the Apple menu, go to System Preferences.
   2. Click Security & Privacy (Mac OS X 10.7 Lion or higher) or Security (Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and earlier)
   3. Click the Firewall tab.
   4. Click the Stop button to disable the firewall.
       
2. Ensure that an antivirus program is not blocking your Internet connection. Consult the Help menu of the antivirus program or see the manufacturer's documentation for instructions to configure it correctly.
