Issue/Introduction

For various reasons, you might need to change the IP address of the vCenter Server system with which your Update Manager system works. This article describes how to reconfigure Update Manager after a change of the vCenter Server IP address, and is intended for you if Update Manager and vCenter Server instances are running on different machines.

Note: This error may be reported when Update Manager has not been reconfigured after changing the vCenter Server IP address:

There was an error connecting to VMware vSphere Update Manager - [x.x.x.x:443]. The request failed because of a connection failure. (Unable to connect to the remote server)

VMware vCenter Update Manager 4.1.x
VMware vCenter Update Manager 5.0.x
VMware vCenter Update Manager 4.0.x
VMware vCenter Update Manager 1.0.x

Resolution

To reconfigure Update Manager after a change of the IP address of the vCenter Server system with which Update Manager is registered, you can run the Update Manager installer again and use the Repair option. If you use Update Manager 4.0 or later, you might not have the Repair option, and so you might not be able to change the vCenter Server IP address by using the installer.

Note: In Update Manager 4.1 Update 1, it is possible to use the vCenter Update Manager Utility to reconfigure Update Manager after a change of the vCenter Server IP address. For more information, see the Re-register Update Manager with vCenter Server section in Reconfiguration of VMware vCenterUpdate Manager. The default location for VMwareUpdateManagerUtility.exe is C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\Infrastructure\Update Manager.

To reconfigure Update Manager after a change of the vCenter Server IP address:

1. Log in to the machine on which the Update Manager server component is installed.
2. Stop the Update Manager service:
   
   
   1. Click Start > Run, type services.msc, and click OK.
   2. Right-click the VMware Update Manager service and click Stop.
      
      
3. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the Update Manager installation folder. The default path is:
   
   
   • 32-bit Windows: C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\Update Manager
   • 64-bit Windows: C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\Infrastructure\Update Manager
     
     
4. Open vci-integrity.xml in a text editor, and find this XML tag:
   
   <vpxdLocation>old_vCenter_Server_IP_address</ vpxdLocation>
   
   
5. Replace the old vCenter Server IP address value with the new one.
6. Save and close the file.
7. Start the Update Manager service:
   
   
   1. Click Start > Run, type services.msc, and click OK.
   2. Right-click the VMware Update Manager service and click Start.
