Issue/Introduction

This article provides information on renaming a datastore that has virtual machines running on it.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 6.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 7.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 8.x

 

Resolution

A datastore that has virtual machines running on it can be renamed without any negative impact. However, if the datastore is shared by more than one ESX host, you must rename the datastore from vCenter Server.
