Issue/Introduction

This article provides steps to manually move the download location for patches and plug-ins in vCenter Update Manager.

This change may be necessary for many reasons, such as disk space issues.

Symptoms:
  • VMware vCenter Update Manager cannot store patches in the repository.
  • VMware vCenter Update Manager is running out of storage space to store patches in the repository.
  • You see the error:

VMware vCenter Update Manager is running out of storage space

Environment

  • VMware vCenter Update Manager 1.0.x
  • VMware vCenter Update Manager 4.0.x
  • VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x
  • VMware vCenter Update Manager 5.5.x
  • VMware vCenter Update Manager 4.1.x
  • VMware vCenter Update Manager 5.1.x
  • VMware vCenter Update Manager 5.0.x
  • VMware vCenter Server 5.0.x

Resolution

To change the default download location for patches:

  1. Open the vci-integrity.xml file. The default file location is C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\Update Manager\vci-integrity.xml.

Note: In 64-bit Windows, the default file location is C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\Infrastructure\Update Manager\vci-integrity.xml.

  2. Search for patchStore. You see an entry similar to:

    <patchStore>C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware Update Manager\Data\</patchStore>

Note: Your new directory is empty and does not contain valid metadata. Copy the old directory's data or run the vCenter Update Manager download update.

  3. Replace the location with the preferred location.
  4. Save and close the file.
  5. Restart the VMware vSphere Update Manager Service. Right-click My Computer > Manage > Services and Applications > Services > VMware Update Manager Server > Restart.
To change the download location for plug-ins:

  1. Open the vci-integrity.xml file.
  2. Search for docRootHostUpdates.

You see an entry similar to:

    <docRootHostUpdates>
    <namespace>"/vci/hostupdates"</namespace>
    <path>C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware Update Manager\Data\</path>
    </docRootHostUpdates>

  3. Replace the location with the preferred location.
  4. Save and close the file.
  5. Reboot the server or right-click My Computer > Manage > Services and Applications > Services > VMware Update Manager Server > Restart.

Note: Do not remove the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware Update Manager\Data\ directory.

You may remove or delete the contents of the following directories, but leave the directory structure intact:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware Update Manager\Data\hostupdate
  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware Update Manager\Data\vm-patch-binaries
