CA Test Data Manager (Data Finder / Grid Tools)

Issue/Introduction

This article provides instructions for applying a full rebuild patch for the the TDM Web Portal application

!IMPORTANT The TDM Portal service automatically manages the GTREP repository database schema. When the service starts, it detects the schema version and applies upgrades automatically if needed. Database upgrades are irreversible without a full backup of the gtrep database, and OrientDB database files.

For global prerequisites and schema warnings, refer back to the TDM Patching Master Guide.

TDM patches are available for download from the Test Data Manager (TDM) Support Patches page.
Enter your Broadcom Support Portal credentials when prompted.

TDM Web Portal Patching Instructions

The TDMWeb patch is a full rebuild. Running the installer performs a complete upgrade of the TDM Portal application.

!IMPORTANT Schema Upgrade: The first time the CA Test Data Manager Portal service starts after a patch, it automatically checks and upgrades the GTREP database schema. This process is irreversible without a backup.

Phase 1: Preparation & Backups

It is required that a full backup of the GTREP repository database, and backup of the OrientDB database files be taken prior to patching. It's important that these two databases remain in synch

  1. DBA Action: Request a full backup of the GTREP database. Mandatory
  2. User Session: Ensure all users have logged off and closed their browsers.

  3. Stop Services:
    • Stop the CA Test Data Manager Portal service.
    • Stop the OrientDB service.

  4. Clean Orphans: Open Windows Task Manager and ensure no orphaned java.exe processes are running.

  5. Directory Backups: Copy the following directories to a secure location:
    • C:\Program Files\CA\CA Test Data Manager Portal (Backup the conf and orientdb subfolders at minimum).
    • %ProgramData%\CA\CA Test Data Manager Portal (Backup the orientdb subfolder at minimum).

  6. Log Maintenance: Navigate to %ProgramData%\CA\CA Test Data Manager Portal\logs and delete or archive all files to ensure a clean start for troubleshooting.

Phase 2: Installation

  1. Extract: Unzip the TDMWeb-<version>.zip file into a temporary directory.

  2. Run Installer: Right-click setup_CA Test Data Manager Portal.exe and select Run as Administrator.

  3. Upgrade: Follow the installation wizard prompts to complete the upgrade.

Phase 3: Post-Upgrade & Verification

  1. Restart Services: Verify services have restarted. If manual restart is required:
    • Restart OrientDB first.
    • Restart CA Test Data Manager Portal second.

  2. Service Account Check: If you use a specific service account (non-Local System):
    • Stop the CA Test Data Manager Portal service.
    • Right-click service → Properties → Log On tab.
    • Re-enter service account credentials → OK.
    • This command will make changes to your system. Review it carefully before running: net start "CA Test Data Manager Portal"
  3. Browser Cache: Clear your browser cache or use an Incognito window.

  4. Monitor Startup: Microservices may take several minutes to initialize. Monitor CPU Utilization in Task Manager; once it stabilizes, the Portal is ready.

  5. Final Check: Log in and verify the version number in the lower-left corner.
  6. Test: Re-verify the original issue.
