Issue/Introduction

This article provides information regarding the vMotion of virtual machines in a vSphere HA environment where a dedicated failover host is configured.

Environment

VMware vSphere 8.0.x
VMware vSphere 9.0.x

Resolution

To ensure that spare capacity is available on a failover host, you are prevented from powering on virtual machines or using vMotion to migrate virtual machines to a failover host. Once a virtual machine has been restarted on a failover host by vSphere HA, it can be migrated back to another ESXi host within the cluster via vMotion.
