Environment

VMware Cloud Director 10.6

Cause

As documented in the VMware Cloud Director 10.6 Release Notes, guest customization for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 SP1 and earlier is no longer supported starting with VCD 10.6.

Resolution

To avoid the power-on failure, disable Guest Customization with the following steps:

  1. Navigate to the affected VM in VCD tenant portal.
  2. Go to Guest OS Customization > EDIT
  3. Uncheck the Enable guest customization option.
  4. Click SAVE.
  5. Power on the VM
  6. Perform any necessary configuration changes manually from within the Guest OS
