Dashboard Import Error in VMware Aria Operations 8.18: "Dashboard Import Failed" or "Invalid File Uploaded"

Issue/Introduction

When attempting to import a dashboard into VMware Aria Operations 8.18, the process fails with one of the following error messages:

• Dashboard import failed

• Invalid file uploaded

 

Environment

Aria Operations 8.18.x

Cause

This issue typically occurs when the exported JSON file from the source Aria Operations instance is incomplete or incorrectly formatted. Specifically, required fields — such as the Dashboard ID may be missing, preventing the dashboard from being successfully imported into the target environment.

Resolution

To be able to import dashboard(s) successfully:

1. Return to the source Aria Operations instance.
2. Re-export the dashboard, ensuring the export includes all necessary parameters — particularly the Dashboard ID.
3. Attempt the import again using the newly exported JSON file.

Note: Avoid manually modifying the JSON file after export, as this may corrupt the file structure and result in failed imports.

 

Important Considerations:

• If the dashboard owner does not exist in the target Aria Operations environment, the import process will skip that dashboard.
• Imported dashboards may rely on dependencies such as:
  • Views
  • Super Metrics
  • Custom Groups

If above mentioned components are missing in the target environment, the imported dashboard may display a wrench icon and appear as "still configuring".
