Issue/Introduction

This article introduces the new vSAN Health Service check 'All hosts have a dedicated vSAN Storage Cluster Client vmknic configured in server cluster' in vSAN and provides details on why it might report the error and how to fix the error state.

This health check is called 'All hosts have a dedicated vSAN Max Client vmknic configured in server cluster' in vSAN 9.0.

Environment

VMware vSAN 9.0
VMware vSAN 9.1

Resolution

Q: What does the 'All hosts have a dedicated vSAN Storage Cluster Client interface configured in server cluster' check do?

When Storage Cluster Client network is enabled on this cluster, each ESXi host in this cluster must have a dedicated interface configured for vSAN Storage Cluster Client traffic. This check is to verify if all hosts in server cluster have a dedicated interface configured for vSAN Storage Cluster Client traffic.

Q: What does it mean when it is in an error state?

If this test returns red, it means this host does not have a interface configured for vSAN Storage Cluster Client traffic or it has multiple interfaces configured for vSAN Storage Cluster Client traffic unexpectedly, when vSAN Storage Cluster Client Network is enabled on this cluster.

Note: it would cause network communication issues between the client cluster and server cluster without dedicated vSAN Storage Cluster Client interface configured.

Q: How does one troubleshoot and fix the error state?

For any host with no vSAN Storage Cluster Client Network configured, please navigate to Host > Configure > Networking > VMkernel Adapters, and enable 'vSAN Storage Cluster Client' for the selected VMKernel adapter.
For any host with multiple vSAN Storage Cluster Client interfaces configured, please navigate to Host > Configure > Networking > VMkernel Adapters, and unselect unnecessary VMKernel adapters to only keep one vSAN Storage Cluster Client interface for the host.
