Issue/Introduction

  • Calculating the size of snapshots on the Virtual Machine and validating the snapshot size reported by the Snapshot Manager

  • The virtual machine is currently running on a snapshot but cannot be consolidated or powered on due to space constraints.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 8.x
VMware vCenter Server 7.x

Resolution

  1. SSH to the ESXi host where the affected Virtual Machine is residing.

  2. Navigate to the directory of the Virtual Machine.
    cd /vmfs/volumes/DS_UUID/VM_name

  3. Run the following command to list the size of all VMDKs (including the flat disks and snapshot delta disks).
    du -h *.vmdk

  4. Add all the disk sizes. This should be approximately equal to the size of the snapshot in the snapshot manager.
