Issue/Introduction

Introduction Access the Direct Console User Interface (DCUI) or the local shell of an ESXi host when the vSphere Client is unavailable or local troubleshooting is required.

Symptoms

  • ESXi host is not responding in vCenter Server.
  • Local vmkernel log review is required due to network isolation.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 7.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 8.x

Resolution

Enable the ESXi Shell in the direct console troubleshooting options. Use the following ALT + Function key combinations to navigate the console:

  1. ALT+F1: Switch to the console/shell.
  2. ALT+F2: Switch to the DCUI.
  3. ALT+F11: Return to the yellow/grey banner screen.
  4. ALT+F12: Display the Vmkernel.log on the console screen.

If the host is unresponsive to these commands, check the hardware management controller (iLO/iDRAC) for "ACPI soft-off" signals or hardware faults.

For further assistance, Contact Broadcom Support.
