Issue/Introduction

This article provides steps to enable vMotion and Fault tolerance logging for an ESXi/ESX host.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 6.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 7.0
VMware vSphere ESXi 8.0
VMware vCenter Server 6.x
VMware vCenter Server 7.0.x
VMware vCenter Server 8.0.x

Resolution

To enable vMotion and/or Fault tolerance logging using the vSphere Web Client:

  1. Log into vCenter using the vSphere Web Client.
  2. Select your ESXi host from the inventory in the Hosts and Clusters view.
  3. In the right-hand panel, select Configure, then select Networking > VMkernel adapters
  4. Select the VMkernel port to be used for vMotion and Fault Tolerance and click the Edit... icon:
  5. If you have not yet created a VMkernel adapter for this purpose, See the document How do I Set Up VMkernel Networking.
  6. Under Enabled Services, select the Fault Tolerance Logging check box. Check the vMotion Traffic box as well, unless that is already configured on this or another VMkernel port. Click OK.
  7. Perform these steps on all other hosts as needed in the cluster.
