Issue/Introduction

Perfcollector is a utility used by Broadcom Support and Engineering to help determine potential performance issues with Spectrum.

Environment

Release: All Supported Releases
Component: SPCCSS - SpectroSERVER Core

Resolution

  1. The preferred method is to run the script on each SS where it will collect data for that SS.

  2. Considerations when running the script
    a. Time to run: 10 to 15 minutes per server.

    b. CPU: perfCollect9 script will increase CPU usage of the SpectroSERVER and Archive Manager through the data collection period of time so it is important to run when the server is not excessively busy.

    c. Memory: No additional memory will be used.

    d. Disk Space: 80 Megs per SpectroSERVER collected.

    e. User: Install user so that the script can create a directory in the Spectrum Install area named Performance

To run:

  1. Open a bash shell on Windows or a regular bash shell on Linux

  2. Navigate to your Spectrum Installation directory.  For example /opt/CA/Spectrum

  3. Run:

    ./perfCollector9 <the name of the SS>

    For example:   ./perfCollector9 SpectroSERVER1

  4. The script will print a status of the data collecting and will print "****** Finished" when the process is complete and it will return the prompt.

  5. This will create a results.tar.gz file in the $SPECROOT/Performance directory.  Please upload that $SPECROOT/Performance/results.tar.gz file to your case for Broadcom Support.

Additional Information

1.  If SpectroSERVER performance data is needed from every SpectroSERVER in the environment you can run the script in distributed mode on the MLS and it will gather the information from all SpectroSERVERs.

Please take note this does increase cpu usage on the MLS and it may run for hours if any SpectroSERVERs have large DDM/mysql databases.

To run the distributed mode on the MLS do not specify a hostname.  Just run the script:  ./perfCollector9

Do not run distributed mode on a non MLS system.

It will create the $SPECROOT/Performance/results.tar.gz file containing the data from all SpectroSERVERs.

2.  Internal Broadcom tools are required to decipher this data.

3.  If you need to run perfcollector9 more than once, you do not need to remove the files.  The next time you run the script it will overwrite the previous files that were created.
