Upgrade Error: Could not create this file

While upgrading CA Release Automation the installer/upgrade, during the Installing phase, generates errors out while copying/creating files:
Could not create this file. Shall I try again?
Yes, No, Cancel

The error is related to their not being enough free space on the file system used to extract the installer files temporarily. The product documentation states that 3.5GB is required in TEMP. The actual location can be determined:
  • On Windows by running: echo %TEMP%
  • On Linux by running: echo $TMP

CA Release Automation version 6.x on Windows or Linux

There are two ways to solve this problem:
  1. Free up space in TEMP so the installer/upgrade can proceed and then click the Yes button to try again.
  2. Set the following environment variable before the install/upgrade:\your\tmp\directory (replace D with whichever file system that has enough free space).
Note: If you go with option #2 then it is worth mentioning that environment variables are either global (available to the entire system from all command prompts) or local (available to only the command prompt you are in while setting the environment variable. If you are setting the environment variable as a local variable then the installer/upgrade should be started from that command prompt. If the environment variable is set as a local environment variable and you execute the installer/upgrade outside of the command prompt where the variable was set then the installer/upgrade will not recognize the variable and fail again.
