DB002765 C-7M2405: Fatal error returned from IDMSSORT message occurs for REORG or MAINTAIN INDEX jobs?

Issue/Introduction

Description:

MAINTAIN index or REORG jobs fail with DB002765 C-7M2405: Fatal error returned from IDMSSORT Function=SORT RC=16. Additional IDMS messages include:

DC208001 IDMS job abending with abend code D002

DC208001 #ABEND from Module RHDCWTL at Location 019E5D08 Offset 001830

If using the SYNCSORT utility, the following messages may ensue:

WER234A DIAG= 08484006 06060006 00000000 00000000 010F8600

WER400A CRITICAL ERROR, SORT TERMINATED

WER215A SORTWK OUT OF SEQ. CHECK FILE OVERLAP

On the other hand, if using the DFSORT utility

SYSTEM COMPLETION CODE=0C4 REASON CODE=00000011

AN S0C4 ABEND WAS ISSUED BY DFSORT, ANOTHER PROGRAM OR AN EXIT (PHASE S 2)

Solution:

During a SORT step of either REORG or MAINTAIN INDEX, IDMSSORT fails with:

DB002765 C-7M2405: Fatal error returned from IDMSSORT Function=SORT RC=16.

This error message can occur for any SORT utility (CA SORT/SYNCSORT/DFSORT), there are other messages following the DB002765 giving more information.

Typically the problem is insufficient Sortwork space or a storage problem.

Increase either the number of Sortwork file DD statements in the REORG/MAINTAIN INDEX JCL, and/or the allocation of Space (REGION size).

For Z/VSE, increase the partition size.
