Synch fails with error 'Flatten Failed on Interface'

ISSUE

NPC is showing a synchronization failure to a data source in NPC.

The error message shown in the log is:

Circular reference found in group relations.

Data source returned System.Exception: Flatten failed on Interface --->
System.Exception: Flatten failed on Interface ---> System.ArgumentException:
Circular reference found in group relations.

DETAILS

This happens if you delete the data source from NPC, and then add it back before it can get rid of the old system groups.

Solution:

Go into NPC Group administration, expand the system groups folder, and look for any user created groups under that (they are blue icons) and delete them.

NPC will generate some user groups there, even if you didn't create them.

Also check under user defined groups and delete those if any are present.

Then wait 5-10 mins for a global resync in NPC data sources at the top where it says last synch time, and the error should clear.
