Issue/Introduction

Description:

ISSUE

Customer needs to reinstall ASP .NET. Often this is needed when a customer is having issues with .NET, which can vary depending on the issue. One common problem that requires this resolution is that when trying to access the web GUI, they get a Reinstalling ASP .NETerror or some other web error due to using an unsupported version of .NET, or something is messed up in the installation of .NET.

RESOLUTION

.NET 2.0 can be downloaded here:

.NET 3.5 SP1 can be downloaded here (installing 3.5 auto installs 2.0 as well):

  • Go to Add/Remove programs and remove ASP .NET 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5.

  • Reboot the server.

  • Install .NET from the links above

  • Reboot the server.

  • Once is reinstalled, it needs to be re-registered with IIS.

    • Open a command prompt on the server, and go to C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727

    • Once there, issue the following command:

      C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis.exe -r
      (if running windows 2008, use -i instead of -r)

  • Then reset IIS by running the command "iisreset"

  • After that, go to IIS settings in Computer Management, and expand Web Sites.

    • Click the 'Web Service Extensions' folder.

    • Make sure that the extension 'ASP.NET v2.0.50727' is Allowed.

    • If not, press the Allowed button to allow the service access.

      You should then be able to load web pages.

ALTERNATE RESOLUTION

If for some reason the first resolution does not work, perform the following steps.

  • Running the dotnetfx_cleanup_tool, run the cleanup operation for .NET 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5 if they are present in the list

  • Reboot

  • Reinstall .NET 2.0 using the above links

  • Check that IIS is properly configured to use and allow .NET 2.0

64 Bit Server Resolution

  • Go to Add/Remove programs and remove ASP .NET 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5.

  • Reboot the server.

  • Install 2.0 from the link above

  • Reboot the server.

  • Once .NET 2.0 is reinstalled, it needs to be re-registered with IIS.

    • Open a command prompt on the server, and go to C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727 Once there, issue the following command:

      C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis.exe -r

Accidentally Installed the 32 Bit Version on a 64 Bit Server

  • Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK

  • From C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727 type: aspnet_regiis -u

  • Now follow the steps above to install and register the correct version of 64 bit asp.net

  • If the correct version of iis is installed, then use the command aspnet_regiis -i from the C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727 to reregister the version.

Uninstalling .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 on Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008

  1. Go to Server Manager

  2. From the list select 'Features'

  3. Click on 'Remove Features' on the right hand side

  4. Clear the check box next to .NET Framework 3.5 SP1

  5. Follow any popup instructions (reboot, etc.)
