A scheduled report emailed from CABI fails with a return code "SMTP 501".

When a CABI scheduled report is sent out by email, the following error messages appear and the email fails to be sent.

Error message: Server Error. Error initializing SMTP server
Return code: [SMTP 501 - Syntax error in parameters or arguments.]
Reason: [mailserver.ex.local:25.]]: [CrystalEnterprise.Smtp]


The error often appears when a domain name in the servers setting, for example, adaptive Job Server setting, is not the domain of a mail server. Please check the settings as per below.

  1. Go to 'Start' > 'Programs' > 'BusinessObjects XI 3.1' > 'BusinessObjects Enterprise' > BusinessObjects Enterprise Central Management Console'.
  2. Log into Central Management Console using BOXI Administrator account and select "Servers" from the dropdown list.
  3. Right click on "Adaptive Job server" and select [Properties]. Click on "destinations".
  4. Choose Email and in the domain field enter the correct domain name.

Now Schedule the report again and verify that the email is sent correctly.
