Search Reindex Memory Issues

When re-indexing documents form the command line using the following command:

admin search recreate-index-files

you get one of the following problems:

  • The reindex completes very quickly (usually less than a minute) and nothing seems to have been done.  You are still experiencing the same problems that you had before the reindex.
  • java.lang.outOfMemory errors when running the command.

For CA PPM Versions 13.3 and Later

1.       Verify the amount of free memory on your server.  If it is less than the amount of memory specified in the scriptMaxMem parameter in the search.xml file (located in the \clarity_home\.setup\scripts folder) or the amount of memory you plan to specify at the command prompt, you need to find a way to free up memory on your server.  Some of the options are:

- Stop some or all of your services while you run this command.
- Restart your server
- Close unneeded programs.

2.       If you needed to free up memory. Try running the recreate index command again.

admin search recreate-index-files

3.       If you need to increase the amount of memory because of an OOM error or because the reindex is completing in seconds and not doing anything, run the reindex command below.

admin search recreate-index-files –DscriptMaxMem 2048m

NOTE:  Change the amount of memory to the amount of memory you want to increase the maximum to.  I suggest increasing the amount specified in the search.xml file by 512 M each time until the reindex succeeds.  You should not increase the memory to more memory than you have available on your server.  If you were getting no error before and start getting java.lang.outOfMemory errors, you are on the right track.

4.       Repeat Steps 1 – 3 until the reindex succeeds.

NOTE:  If you get the following error:

Error occurred during initialization of VM
Could not reserve enough space for object heap

This means that there was not enough contiguous memory on your system for the –DscriptMaxMem value that you specified.  There are several ways to increase your contiguous memory.

- Stop some or all of your services while you run this command.
- Restart your server
- Close unneeded programs.
