Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Conversion fails between 90% - 99%
  • The virtual machine appears to be created on the destination.
  • The virtual machine boots to a blue diagnostic screen with statement:

    7B Stop Code INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

Environment

VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.3.x
VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 5.0.x
VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 6.0.x
VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.0.x
VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 5.1.x

Cause

This blue diagnostic screen can occur when the machine converted does not have the necessary SCSI Controller drivers necessary to boot properly.

Resolution

To obtain the drivers necessary for the needed SCSI Controller drivers, you need to reconfigure the virtual machine using VMware Converter Standalone.
  1. Open VMware Converter Standalone.
  2. Click Configure Machine.
  3. Point to the newly created virtual machine.
  4. Deselect all boxes except Reconfigure Destination Virtual Machine.
  5. Click Next and reconfigure the virtual machine.
  6. Power on the virtual machine.
  7. Verify that the blue diagnostic screen disappears.
You can also inject the SCSI controller device drivers into the problem Windows machine to resolve this issue. For more information see, Injecting SCSI controller device drivers into Windows when it fails to boot after converting it with VMware Converter (1005208).

If these steps do not resolve the issue, try one of these workarounds:
  • Change SCSI controller on newly converted VM:
    1. Power off newly converted VM
    2. Select newly converted VM in inventory
    3. Right click on VM and Edit Settings
    4. Navigate to the SCSI Controller 0
    5. Change Type to LSI Logic SAS
    6. Click OK to save changes
    7. Power on VM

  • Boot from the Windows installation DVD:
    1. Insert the Windows DVD in the drive (or select the Windows disc image).
    2. Start (or restart) the virtual machine.
    3. When prompted, press any key to boot to the DVD.
    4. In the language screen, click Next.
    5. In the Install Windows screen, click Repair your computer.
    6. Highlight the Windows partition and click Use Recovery Tools that can help fix problems starting Windows.
    7. Click Next.
    8. Click Command Prompt.
    9. Type regedit without quotes.
    10. Press Enter.

  • Update the registry.

Note: This procedure modifies the Windows registry. Before making any registry modifications, ensure that you have a current and valid backup of the registry and the virtual machine. For more information on backing up and restoring the registry, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 136393.

The preceding link was correct as of September 4, 2013. If you find the link is broken, provide feedback and a VMware employee will update the link.
  1. Click Start > Run, type regedit, and click OK. The Registry Editor window opens.
  2. In the Registry Editor, select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
  3. Select File > Load Hive.
  4. Navigate to the drive on which Windows is installed (usually C:\).
  5. Open the file named SYSTEM located at Windows/system32/config.
  6. Name the file as P2V, when prompted.
  7. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\P2V\ControlSet001\services\LSI_SAS.
  8. Right-click the Start key and click Modify.
  9. Set the Value data to REG_DWORD 0.
  10. Close the Registry Editor.
  11. Restart the virtual machine.
