Endpoint Protection Content Delivery Changes for Windows Vista, 7, Server 2008 and 2008 R2

Issue/Introduction

Starting September 26, 2023 content updates(definitions) will no longer be signed with a SHA-1 certificate. This will impact some legacy unpatched Operating Systems from applying updates. 

Environment

Affects the following Operating Systems.

• Windows Vista
• Windows 7
• Server 2008
• Server 2008 R2

Cause

Microsoft Secure Hash Algorithm (SHA-1) has been deprecated.

Resolution

After September 26, 2023, content updates will only be signed with a SHA-2 certificate.  To continue receiving content updates(definitions) on legacy Operating Systems, use one of the options below.

Windows 7, Server 2008 and 2008 R2

• • Install this Microsoft Windows Update to allow SHA-2 signed content updates.

Windows Vista

• • Upgrade to an Operating System which has support for files signed with a SHA-2 certificate.
