IT Management Suite Deployment Solution

Issue/Introduction

The customer has recently migrated to a new SMP Server. As suggested in KB 204145 "Migrating a stand-alone ITMS 8.1 RU7 instance to ITMS 8.5 RU4 using new hardware and a new host name for Notification Server", he copied his pre-existing image files to the same location on the new SMP server:

  • For Images, copy the content of \\localhost\NSCap\bin\Deployment\Packages\Images folder on the old ITMS server and upload it to the same location on the new ITMS server.

However, on the new SMP server, the image location still shows the old one (the image below originally displayed the previous SMP server name).

Environment

ITMS 8.5 RU4+

Resolution

In this particular scenario, you will need to re-import your image files so the new location path reference can be updated with the new path on the SMP Server.

Use Deployment Solution Resource Import Tool (ResourceImportTool.exe) to re-import your image files:

You can use the Deployment Solution Resource Import Tool to import an existing image. You can import images and then use them to deploy on client computers. If you want to import a split Ghost image, selection of one split automatically selects the other splits also.

Deployment Solution Resource Import Tool lets you import images that are located on HTTP Web server. User credentials are not required to access the location on the HTTP Web server.

You can also import OS packages using the Deployment Solution Resource Import Tool.

To import an existing image (in this example, we will importing a Win10 image):

  1. Browse to \C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Agents\Deployment\Task Handler\Tools” or [Altiris Agent Install Dir]\Agents\Deployment\Task Handler\Tools and execute the ResourceImportTool.exe.
You can execute this tool from Symantec Management Platform or from Site Server. Ensure that you run this tool only from Symantec Management Platform.
  2. Browse to <Install Directory>\Program Files\Altiris\Deployment\Tools and execute the ResourceImporterTool.exe. You can execute this tool from Symantec Management Platform.
  3. On the Deployment Solution Resource Import Tool, click browse to C:\DS_Resources\Win10 Image, and open required .gho or .img file.
  4. From the Select OS, select Windows 10.
  5. Click Import.
  6. A message indicating the successful upload of image is displayed. Acknowledge the message and close the Deployment Solution Resource Import Tool.

Note:

In some situations, you may need to delete the old image file reference if you see a duplicate entry when trying to select the image file for your deployment task. The original way to accomplish this was:

Remove the resource for the older version of the image. This is located in the console under 'Manage > Resource'.
From the dropdown locate 'Software Component' and then select 'Image Resource'.
Find the listing for the old version of the OS image. Click OK and delete.

With the release of DS 8.5 RU4 release, new functionality was added to handle the need to cleanup unused image packages and similar DS files. Please take a look at:
"Deleting images, packages, and resources"

The structure of DS images was reorganized to process all types of images in the same way as we were doing with regular packages. DS image resource management from SMP console was implemented. Files deletion from SMP\PS was implemented as part of it. Copy file tasks (and some other tasks) were reworked to correctly process associated packages and related files.
