Resolution

Microsoft Office 2019 products use virtualization and streaming Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) technology. Microsoft uses the Click-to-Run method of downloading and updating Office 2019 products. The click-to-Run method differs from the traditional Windows Installer-based (MSI) method in the following way:

  • You do not need to download the whole Office product installer, and then update it to the current version with patches and service packs. With Click-to-Run, you download a single executable program that lets you initiate Click-to-Run streaming and application start processes. You can start using the product while the rest of it is being downloaded in the background to a network or HTTP share (the default location is Microsoft CDN). When you open an application that is not yet downloaded and installed, Click-to-Run immediately downloads it from there and installs it on the client computer.

  • By default, Click-to-Run products are updated automatically on client computers. You can disable automatic updating or invoke updating manually in the Office menu. During the update process, the Office updater service (ClickToRunSvc) connects to the network location that stores the full image of the latest version of Office and then downloads only the updates for the Office components that are installed in your environment. Thus the download size depends on the number of the installed Office components and the number of the Office files to be updated.

Starting from February 2019, the patch management metadata for Windows release 7.3 contains the following Microsoft Office 2019 software products:

  • Microsoft Office Click to Run 2019 Volume
This product refers to volume-licensed versions of Microsoft Office 2019, such as Office Professional Plus 2019 purchased through a volume licensing agreement.
The Microsoft Office 2019 Volume update is assigned to this product.
  • Microsoft Office Click to Run 2019 Retail
This product refers to retail versions of Microsoft Office 2019, such as Office Professional 2019 purchased at a retail store.
The updates for Office 365 Monthly Channel are assigned to this product.
Note: Microsoft uses the Office 365 Monthly Channel to release updates for both Microsoft Office 365 and Office 2019 Retail. The same update applies to all corresponding editions of a product. For this reason, the Microsoft Office 2019 Retail update is assigned to 3 software products:
    • Microsoft Office Click to Run 2016
    • Microsoft Office Click to Run 2016 (Office 365 Monthly Channel)
    • Microsoft Office Click to Run 2019 Retail

For more information, see the Microsoft article Update history for Office 2019.

Patch Management Solution provides software bulletins for supported Microsoft update channels.
Note: A separate bulletin is available for each date when Microsoft Office 2019 Volume updates are released. Microsoft Office 2019 Retail updates share the bulletin with Microsoft Office 365 monthly updates.

The naming scheme for the bulletins is as follows:

  • MSYY-MM-VL2019 - for Microsoft Office 2019 Volume updates.
For example, MS19-01-VL2019 is the name of the bulletin that includes the January 2019 Microsoft Office 2019 Volume updates and is presented in the Symantec Management Console as follows:

  • MSYY-MM-O365-MONTHLY – for Microsoft Office 2019 Retail updates.
For example, MS19-01-O365-MONTHLY is the name of the bulletin that includes the January 2019 Microsoft Office 2019 Retail updates and is presented in the Symantec Management Console as follows:

You use these bulletins to create a software update policy that delivers and installs Microsoft Office 2019 updates to the appropriate computers. You create the software update policy with the Distribute Software Updates wizard.
